It all began...
During the summer of 2016 in a small cabin in Northern Ontario with a toaster oven and no running water, Michelle and Christine had big dreams of mastering a cake recipe that fit their gluten-free and Paleo lifestyle. With much trial and error and mountains of cake-battered dishes later, the first of many health-inspired desserts were created.
After returning home to Toronto with a rejuvenated belief that anything was possible with natural grain-free and cane sugar-free baking, it became clear that something special could come of this discovery - and that 'something special' turned out to be The Butternut Baking Co.
The Butternut became Toronto’s first 100% natural baking company to specialize in gluten-free, paleo, and naturally low-carb bakes. After successful days spent selling treats at local events and connecting with people in search of healthier dessert options, it was obvious that there was an underserved market in Toronto.
As a result of the high-demand for scrumptious and nutritious treats, Michelle and Christine searched for a permanent location to make a home for The Butternut Baking Co. Soon after, they found the perfect space to share their bakes and in May 2017 they opened their doors for the very first time at 2743 Dundas Street West in Toronto’s vibrant Junction community.
